Junior Design, Spring 2025
Junior Design examines how design can serve as an agent of change. Each year, the course addresses a pressing social issue affecting a specific population, with a focus on its connection to New York City. Students respond through a series of design outputs, each requiring a clearly defined audience, intended action, and purpose.

This year’s theme centered on housing and urban inequality as a major force behind displacement in New York. Students investigated the systemic factors driving housing instability—urban planning, economic disparity, and gentrification—and analyzed their impact on communities. Through case studies and critical discussion, the class examined the human toll of the crisis and explored possible design-based interventions.

Students built advanced visual and conceptual skills through studio projects, readings, writing, community engagement, and lectures. The course emphasized the integration of theory and practice, encouraging process-driven, collaborative approaches to real-world problem-solving. Content remained adaptive to current events and evolving conversations within the field of graphic design.
